Building a Freeway - Caissons
The Arizona Department of Transportation is currently constructing a new phase of freeway, Loop 303 in the Phoenix metro area. In an effort to educate the public about transportation infrastructure, ADOT is producing videos and blogs (http://adotblog.blogspot.com/) that chronicle the building of a freeway. This video focuses on the fabrication and installation of more than 100 bridge caissons at three interchanges along the project. The steel cages for these particular caissons are 95-feet long and weigh about 20,000 pounds. The cages were lowered into 88-feet-deep drilled shafts and filled with 80 cubic yards (8 truckloads) of concrete each.
